BREAKING THE SILENCE : A CALL FOR CHANGE

This is a story of Misbah a four year old girl who became the victim of an unspeakable brutality. The day was February 6th in the Singli district of Maharashtra. It was just like any normal day. Children were playing and everybody was busy in their daily routines. But then the unimaginable happened. Misbah disappeared. All the family members and the neighbourhood tried searching for her. One of the neighbour told that she last so her playing outside just minutes before she was gone. But she was nowhere to be found. At last the police was called up. And after hours of and hours of searching she was found assaulted, barely conscious, fighting for her life.

This tragic incident shook the entire community. Unfortunately such incidents are not isolated. Women always face the constant threat of harm it may be through harassment or physical abuse. This is reality we live with. The safety of women should not be negotiated at all, this matter requires urgent attention. It is very important to create such an environment for women where they feel safe and protected.

Every now and then women and children fear stepping out in the world, knowing that every corner is filled with danger. This constant fear limits there freedom and keeps them away from being themselves and pursuing their dreams. The world which should be a place of peace becomes the place full of violence and dangers. To build a society where everyone feels safe, we must challenge the society that allows such violence.

According to the national crime records bureau (NCRB) data, 4,28,278 crimes against women reported in the year 2021 and as of today there has been an increase by 87%  in the same. In a country like India where women are worshipped as goddesses, this increasing crime rate stand in a very sharp contrast. This data serves as a reminder of the urgent need for both societal and legal reforms to address the issue of women safety. The fact that the numbers are continuing to grow show that the crime against women are very wide spread problem.

It's the men who can't control their temptations, but somehow it's always the woman who gets blamed for drawing attention to herself. Her character and her behaviour is blamed to justify the wrong doings of an imposter. This troubling mind set of blaming women about their appearance, actions or choices is responsible for ruining the peace of the society. Instead of holding the men accountable for their actions it unfairly shifts on women.

All the authorities say that they will ensure that all the cases are brought to justice. But no punishment can ever bring back any life or bring back that mental peace that a woman has lost after being exposed to such violated activities. We cannot undo anything that has already been done, we can only hope that the things get better. And every incident is a painful reminder of the darkness we are surrounded with.

How many more children and women will suffer before a real action is taken? We need a mind set that protects and provides and not a mind set that harms and snatches the peace of the society.
