Mrs. Movie : Unleashing Womanhood

Mrs. is a touching drama movie that delves into the hardships of the societal expectations that are imposed on women. Sanya Malhotra who played the protagonist delivered an outstanding performance in the film. This film is the remake of the movie 'The Great Indian Kitchen'. Like many women the protagonist is also expected to dedicate herself entirely to manage the home especially the kitchen.

This shows how women are expected to mold themselves into certain standards set by the society that doesn't allow them to be their true selves. It shows how women have to be the perfect ideal wife, mother,daughter-in-law and a perfect homemaker who has to nurture her family.

The daughter-in-law who enters into a marriage full of high hopes and expectations, soon navigates how she has to conform her role determined by her 'family'.

Some people were criticizing the movie saying that "what's the problem with cooking for just two  people?" And I say that cooking is not at all a problem. The problem is that when a woman is neglected both emotionally and physically. She is taken for granted and is not at all appreciated for the work she does.

Women are expected to sacrifice their individuality for the sake of others. And they can't even express their dissatisfaction openly neither they can question and they just have to accept these roles. The discomfort and rigidity that they face in their new life goes unseen by everyone because nothing changes for them, it is only the daughter-in-law who completely has to transform into a new person to fit into the norms of her new 'home'.

The climax of the movie shows how one can break free from these norms and build courage to be our true-self. It shows how important it is for women to stand up for themselves and to speak for themselves and how they should deny the domestic labour. In a marriage both the partners should stand as equal and it is a husband's responsibility to make his wife feel welcomed and loved as she joins his family.
