Kunal Kamra Case: Understanding the Power of Speech
Kunal kamra's recent performance has sparked some debates where he targeted Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde by referring to him as a gaddar (traitor) mocking Shinde's 2022 politician defection.
Many of Shinde's supporters ransacked the habitat comedy club which was the venue of the performance and legal action against Kamra has also been taken.
His jokes have led to a violent attack on the venue which completely showcased how a joke about a political humour can go wrong.
Although almost every comedian in his or her act often targets the political system, then why is it that he is being highlighted? Are the citizens not even allowed to express themselves? should they just hold their mouths and say nothing?
Yes, his jokes were harsh, but they were not intended to cause any harm. Humor is the best possible way to address any pressing issue but one must consider a fine line between comedy and targeting the system.
The irony of this case is how quickly an action was taken. Kamra's jokes were literally followed by violence. The politicians focus more on some jokes and humour rather than the real critical issues.
More important issues such as women's safety, children's education, economic inflation and many more important issues still remain unaddressed.
The attack and this violence was completely unnecessary. We don't see set answers when the issue is an innocent getting killed or exploited. Excimply means that the system manipulated republic into North speaking for expressing themselves.
There is a strong need of healthy dibbean criticism rather than promoting violence. Kamra's case can also be a call for change to understand the power and impact at one's speech holds.
